Prior to the Arab invasion, Iranians, based on their Mehrian beliefs, which originated as far back as 5000 BC, created a rich culture with values such as bravery, truthfulness, honesty, integrity, love for mankind, respect for animals and the environment. At a later date, they enriched these values with Zarathustra’s campaign for abandoning all superstitious beliefs with an emphasis on strive for knowledge based on three principles of “Good thought” “Good word” and “Good deed”. Based on these beliefs, Iranians enjoyed a culture with high values, and a society with a very high rate of literacy, which was one of the reasons for their superpower status from 550 BC to 634 A D.
The country had several universities during Sassani dynasty and used to be the cradle of higher education in the world. The Gondy Shapoor University , with schools of medicine, agriculture, veterinarian sciences, philosophy, nursing, chemistry, etc. used to attract graduate students from Rome , Greece , India and many other advanced nations of that time. After the invasion of the Arabs, education was forbidden all together. The Koran was the only book worthy of reading, Arabic was the only language worthy of learning and everyone had to assume Arabic name.
All books were burned, all universities and laboratories were destroyed, reading was a sin, a writer was a sinner and sinners would be punished severely. As an example Baayazid Bastaami the great Iranian philosopher was executed in 268 Ghammari (Lunar calendar) at age of 81 in a most barbaric fashion. They first cut his arms then his legs, each from opposite side so he would suffer different types of pains while dying. This type of torture killing is the order of Koran “Verse (Soreh); 4, Ayeh; 22) against “Kaffars”. His crime was teaching philosophy that clashed with the Islamic version of “creation.”
The Iranian culture with strive for knowledge, which was consistently producing thinkers, scholars, and leaders was oppressed for 610 years, in which it became the culture of illiterates and followers. The culture of bravery, truthfulness, and honesty became a culture of cowardice, lies, and deception.
The women of Iran, who used to run the affairs of villages and towns and participated in all activities in the society with equal rights, became strictly housekeepers with no social or legal rights. Unfortunately the Arabs, whom our ancestors used to call barbarians, during 610 years of occupation, have showed such an advanced skill of not only conquering our land and enjoying 610 years of power and wealth, but they also captured the soul, mind, and spirit of our people, via religion, to a point that after seven centuries of their departure, Iranians are still captivated by these invaders. We still worship the God that they forced us to worship, we kept Arabic names that they forced us to accept, we still use the alphabet that they imposed upon us, and we still send money to those invaders’ descendents. The Arabs showed that they not only had better strategies in the battlefields in occupying our land but, by depriving the conquered Iranians from education, they showed that they were better strategists in conquering our minds and souls as well. At the end of the Ghajar dynasty, the literacy rate among female Iranians was close to zero and among male Iranians was below one percent. The illiterates could not read the history of their country to find out how and under what circumstances their ancestors became Muslim, and why they, the Iranians, have Arabic names and use the Arabic alphabet. These illiterates, whom the early twentieth century Iranian poet Meerzadeh Eshghi named “ Kolla Namadi Ha “ had been following the mullahs for centuries.
Because the mullahs were the only ones who could read and write, the” Kolla Namadi Ha” used to think that mullahs knew the history better, hence the mullah’s version of the history of Iran became accepted by the majority. Today the sons and daughters of the “Kolla Namadi Ha”, with college degrees, are the new generation of “Kolla Namadi Ha” whom, while despising the mullahs and disapproving of the “Shariat” and calling it a primitive law, still embrace that “primitive” ideology because it was inherited from their Kola Namadi parents and “Thou Shalt have respect for one’s parents.”
