Why Does NATO Still Exist?
By Maziar Aptin, February 7, 2024
In brief, NATO was created by 12 countries from Europe and North
America on April 4, 1949. The purpose of creating this military alliance
was to counter the Soviet Union and to contain communism.
In response, the Soviet Union created the Warsaw Pact.
On December 26, 1991, the Soviet Union was dismantled, and all
members of the Warsaw Pact declared independence and
Consequently the Warsaw Pact was disintegrated.
As we can see, the creation of NATO was a military alliance against
the Soviet Union. Now, if the Soviet Union no longer exists, then
NATO should be dismantled as well; but unfortunately, with the
leadership of the United States, since 1991 NATO has been
expanding.
My question is: Why is there a need for NATO to begin with!
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the West rightfully built friendly
relationships with former Warsaw Pact members such as Poland,
Czech Republic, the Balkan countries, and the rest, except with
Russia.
In my opinion, the existence of NATO is tied to the power of “the
military industrial complex” (the phrase President Eisenhower had
coined).
If there is no conflict in the world, the war material-producing
companies will go out of business. As such, NATO’s existence makes
sense for those companies, but not for the victims or the rest of the
world's citizens, or for humanity.
